so... I just killed a vampire...
« on: February 21, 2012, 07:28:47 pm »

Well, a vampire just killed a baby, and got off easy (survived some hammering and went on her business), so I decided to take matters into my own hands - burrowed her into an atom-smasher.

But now she's listed as "missing".  This is nagging at me - it would probably have been much easier for me to set up some spikes on her; at least then I'd have a body to bury.  I've already got slabs waiting to be engraved, but because she's listed as "missing" I can't memorialize her yet.  Will I just have to wait for her to be assumed "dead" and will I have to worry about ghosts?

The correct answer is "magma".

I dropped both of my culprits into the magma pipe on the bridge-burrow named Damnatio Memoriae...

Do you always look at it in ASCII?

You get used to it, I don't even see the ASCII.  All I see is blacksmith, miner, goblin.

Nobody's answered my question yet...  since there's no body for my dwarves to discover as dead, how long will she stay marked "missing" before I can quell any ghosts?

"Missing" units are declared dead after around an in-game week I believe.

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

I don't know about that, I know that  you'll get the "missing for about a week" message that essentially informs you they're dead but they remain "missing".

Taken from the dev log:

If a body cannot be found (as in a cave-in), missing dwarves will be presumed dead after a time, before ghosts start showing up most likely, so you can have time to memorialize them, but failing that the appearance of a ghost will also serve as a death confirmation!

There are three things I know about dwarves:
1. They've got beards. Even the women.
2. They're short. Especially the women.
3. They're Scottish.

When the zombies attacked, I acidentally atom-smashed a farmer when we was pulling the last of the cattle over the bridge. He dissapeared while the yak fell into the moat. After a week he was still missing, no assumptions about his being alive or not were made. After a few months his ghost appeared wandering the bridge back and forth. There he remained until another zombie attack destroyed the fort a year later or so.

My dwarves never presumed he was dead. He was perpetually missing. I do not know if this is a special effect from atom-smashing.

If that's the case it's definitely more than a week, I made a fort where every single migrant died but I could only report the deaths as they were witnessed by other migrants or after their ghost rose.

I believe I read an related post about an atom smashed vampire. It is very bad news:

Because the body is gone, it cannot be buried and a vampire ghost will appear.
And because vampires assume an identity, a slab with the true ghost name cannot be made, making it impossible to put the ghost to rest.

Worse still, vampire ghost continue to feed ...

I'll try and find that post. The post is called "ghostly vampire"
