Suspected Vampire
« on: February 20, 2012, 12:33:30 pm »

I've had one guy die in his bed, and another run around as Pale without any combat.
I think I have a vampire in my fort.

Now, my immediate suspicion is my King Consort, as he has a title and adventure mode has taught me that having titles means you're a vampire.
He arrived in my first immigrant wave.

Am I being paranoid or do I need to throw stakes down?

1) Paranoia is the best friend you'll ever meet, but you still shouldn't trust him.

2) Titles now don't always mean a vampire. Check clothing and see if he's caked in layers of jewelry. Might be a vampire.

3) For a cheaty way of detecting vampires, try to give them a custom profession name. If it won't change, he's a vamp.

4) For more conventional ways, look at some of these other vampire detection threads.

If you ever actually find him, keep him in a castle above ground. He can be the "welcoming committee".

Alternately I saw someone suggest you wall a discovered vampire into an office and make him a bookkeeper. Personally this finds appeal with me since A) I hate wasting a whole dorf on that in early forts and B) when he's done you know where he'll be. Forever.

That wasn't technically a miscarriage, but the doctors didn't have a concise term for "gave birth and immediately baptized the baby in liquid fire."

There are many ways to use a locked in vampire. So far I've only found one so I put him at the bottom of my goblin dump arena, locked it and flooded it. I have him fight goblins. The dudes a great swimmer and axedwarf, can't drown and has the advantage of not being dropped 5z into the arena.

You could also use a vampire as a 'blackbox', in case your fortress ever falls to any number of things.

Or, use him as a secluded lever puller that controls your entire fortress.  Also works with the first idea.
