Another thing. It seems to me that, when your dwarves are up at least one Z-level and behind a Fortification, they will not do straight shots very often. Targeting at this point becomes a moody bitch and with a whole squad on station, only a few of them end up actually shooting (and those are the ones who have to shoot at an angle, usually close to diagonal). If they are set to patrol along a Fortified line, this is a moot point since they'll stop when they have a target.. but if you have them stationed to steer clear of enemy ranged squads, it becomes a game of luck and re-stationing your squad back and forth to get a dwarf on that lucky spot / lucky angle.

Dwarves use the ingenious 1-handed crossbow! Reloads with one hand, leaving your other hand free for a shield! Or a baby! Or two babies! Or a barrel of booze!

 :P
Wait, they do? *facepalm*
Also, why not all of the above? After all, the shield goes on the arm, leaving the hand free for the booze keg, and dwarven babies are also known as "organic applique armor".

Certainly you could argue that DF is a lot like The Sims, only... you know... with more vomit and decapitation.
If you launch a wooden mine cart towards the ocean at a sufficient speed, you can have your entire dwarf sail away in an ark.

This is a good time to mention that floor grates and floor bars actually block line of sight and line of fire.
Didn't Toady say he fixed that? I'd find the quote myself, but...
