Gaming with Mother
« on: February 20, 2012, 07:59:48 pm »

So my mother is a nerd (I'm so proud), and wants to get something that we can both play. We used to play a ton of AoE II back in the day, and lately she's on a bit of a zombie kick. I've been trying to get her to give the WASD a shot (so we can get L4D2), but she's a bit hesitant.

She's also been playing the Alien Swarm game that's currently free on Steam and seems to enjoy that.

My question is - I'm coming up completely blank for squad based shooters that aren't too complicated, or more simple resource gathering/war games that she might get into (a la AoEII). I've delved through my Steam game list as well as roaming through some review websites, but there are just too many games out there and I can't recall specific ones I've read about/played and enjoyed.

Any advice?

Both Empire Earth and Rise of Nations are similar to AOE style but you go all the way from stone age to high tech. I kinda enjoyed Empire Earth a little more, overall.

BTW Empire Earth really shines in the big multiplayer maps.

Warcraft 3, perhaps?  A bit old but it holds up really well.  Also there are zombies.

Jagged Alliance Online is a simple squad based shooter and is free(ish).

There are several games similar to Alien swarm. Most of them are not as polished as AS, but i did enjoy them quite a lot (on that note, when is someone going to create a Crusader No Remorse/Regret sequel?)
Alien Shooter 1-2, Zombie Shooter maybe too? There are some more along that line.
For simple, as in straight forward shooters there is the secret king of the genre: Killing Floor.
My non-nerd mom (i love them dearly nevertheless) did enjoy Flower on the PS3 allot, although it doesn´t sound like your mom would like that too much. ^^

Im voting for the first Empire Earth. The graphics style is very much like AoE2. Its a little more complex because it has another resource type on top of a faaaaaar longer tech tree (AoE has 4 ages, Empire Earth w/expansion has what, 12?). The basic gameplay is pretty much the same though, with the difference being not having to build a ton of houses to increase popcap and only being allowed 6 villagers to each resource source.

Also, Age of Mythology. Made by the AoE guys, this game is what Age of Empires 3 should of been. Think Age of Empires, but instead of picking what empire you are, you pick a civilization (Norse, Greek, Atlantian, or Egyptian) and then a god to worship (3 gods per civilization for a total of 12). The combination of civ and god determine the way you play along with your tech tree. Amazing game. Everything is just like Age of Empires... but with mythological beings aiding your army! Oh, and god powers... METEOR STRIKE IN THE MIDDLE OF HIS ARCHER GROUP: GO!

Could give L4D a whirl. Co-Op is doable with 2 people at lower difficulties. And it's got plenty of zombies and squad-based mechanics.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! I'll go check out Empire Earth on GOG. It's been a long time since I've touched that. I don't know anything about Jagged Alliance, will take a look at that as well.
