Lag in Towns
« on: February 19, 2012, 11:38:57 am »

How come sometimes I get no lag whatsoever but in a town the same size or even smaller I get masses of lag? In the town I'm currently in I've been in two temples (where I normally get lag for some reason and the sewers, no lag but I get even close to the keep and the game just grinds to a halt. This is getting so frustrating D:

Just to clarify, most towns I can wander around the keep without a problem, I've had a quest to go kill a vampire in the keep but I can't even get close with my game freezing up.

I reccomend letting him go nuts, though.  If he goes berserk, free target practice for your military!  If he doesn't, raving naked bedridden dwarf!

It's because of the massive number of items that the game needs to keep track of. Each individual item in each individual store and in each individual market stall for each individual marketer really piles the hell up on one's framerate

Why do items contribute so much to lag? It seems the bane of FPS in Dwarf Mode too.

What the hell sort of algorithms need to be performed for an item to sit on the floor or be stuck in a bin?

Temperature, mostly. Food items probably do rot checks too, I'd imagine... though I'm surprised there are no stories of markets full of rotting food. Wonder how that's being averted?
