'Number of * Types'?

What does 'Number of * Types' do in the worldgen parameters? For example, 'Number of Vampire Curse Types' - are there different types of vampire? From what I've heard there aren't. Even more intriguingly, what does 'Number of Secret Types' do?

Is it possible that it has something to do with the materials that hurt them?  For instance, one might be vulnerable to bronze and the other to silver, could these be two different strains of vampirism?

i think the vampire curse one is related to how vampires are created in worldgen.  the "profane the temple" type thing.
