Well... I wanted a challenge, I guess...
« on: February 21, 2012, 12:07:42 am »

So. I wasn't 100% ready to take on necromancers and zombie horsehair, so I embarked to a more pleasant environment. Along the way, I decided, well, might as well make it more difficult. So I chose a site with an aquifer, ocean, and a river. Yaa... Did I mention it was also a peninsula? :-D

So I embark, and quickly discover that my little strip of land is only 1/3 of the embark site, and the aquifer is at the beach level. On top of it is 3 layers of soil, not a rock in site. Plenty of trees, though. So I very quickly dug in, cut multiple pathways, started cutting down every tree in sight, and started work.

Question: With no metal and no stone, I can't make mechanisms... How bad is this going to suck for me, getting through this aquifer on dwarf power alone? :p

You don't need mechanisms to make pumps. You only need wood.

Also with three layers of soil you can just collapse a plug of earth into the aquifer level and dig through that.

Depends. If it's only two z-levels of aquifer, you have barely enough soil to punch through it by dropping a soil plug into it, which isn't really too difficult. If the aquifer runs any deeper than that, well.. you'll need a lot of wood and dwarfpower to run a ton of pumps.

That's why I said on dwarf power alone:p

Ya, I'm going to try to plug it. Best bet, I think.

Drop a very large plug.  Try to make it big enough so that if it's not enough, you still have room to do a traditional pump circle.

Plug is the best way for single-level aquifiers... If you're lucky, it'll only be one layer. I actually think that embark would be kind of fun... now I"m going to be looking for something like that, lol

look up the double slit method on this forum,  apparently it can punch through any depth of aquifer,  only requries enough materials for 1 manualy operated pump and only uses a 2x4 hole.

Doesn't a pump require a mechanism?
