[Spiders Everywhere]

So a berserk dwarf dismembered my original broker, leaving me with no one with Appraiser skill. I designated a new broker and had him make lots and lots of small trades with the next caravan that came in. This got him up to no-adjective Negotiator and Judge of Intent, but he's still stuck at Dabbling Appraiser. Anyone know what actually contributes to the Appraiser skill?

That's what I thought, but when I started trading my guy was:

Dabbling Appraiser
Dabbling Negotiator
Dabbling Judge of Intent

and when I finished trading, he was:

Dabbling Appraiser
Negotiator
Judge of Intent

So Appraiser is gained excruciatingly slowly and/or comes from some other source.

It seems that it can be slow.

I'm not sure if it really helps or not, but I try to make as many trades as possible rather than a single large trade.

He's gotta be the person to look at stuff that caravans brings in.  He has to make a trade with some new caravan goods.  He should make novice in about two caravans, so it doesn't take long.

In my experience, appraiser skill is raised only by looking at the stuff the caravan brings initially. The actual trading raises other skills, but not appraiser.

EDIT: The discussion page on the wiki also agrees with this.

my clerk had master appraiser in about 5 years

I think this is right. The next caravan was human with 3 wagonloads of stuff, and his skill jumped straight to Skilled as soon as he got to the depot.

I checked my broker's skill when the caravan arrived today, both before and after he arrived to the depot. Of course, the caravan arrived empty, so that didn't help with testing.
