The new gods!
« on: February 14, 2012, 10:06:50 pm »

I was just browsing the stats and relationships of various citizens to weigh their liklihood of vampirism, and found that the gods have histories!

One of my citizens worships Girus, who often takes the form of a female human and is associated with war and disease. Apparently Girus has cursed a few different vampires to "prowl the night in search of blood", and cursed a few other creatures to assume the form of some sort of monster every full moon. The other diety of choice, Dakas, has a similar history.

Not all dieties have this history, but a suprising number do.

Gods are the origins of all vampires, werecreatures and necromancers. Before they become vampires or werecreatures, the people 'profane [religious site]' and are then cursed by the God. Necromancers on the other hand claim a stone slab that a God created which they use to learn about the secrets of life and death.

One odd thing I noticed in my first world I genned: The gods were strangely fond of weretapirs.

The best part of this update is the "Only in Dwarf Fortress" quotes that have been created...

I look at the dwarven dieties. I see dwarven gods upon gods. Rarely do I see any that differ from this ... the occasional bat or hoary marmot.

Meanwhile humans have all kinds of awesome animal gods. Bears, foxes, cougars... Sometimes several per civ! ... and I get jealous. oh how jealous I get.

Oh, yeah, that first world of mine had not one, but two fire imp gods of mountains and volcanoes. One of them even got some worshipers and dished out some curses.

"Atesh the Shells of Murder is a deity of the Diamond of Disembowelment. Atesh most often takes the form of a rotting female dwarf and is associated with creation, rebirth, death, war and fortresses"

Besides the 2 vampires and 1 were-creature she created, she also created "The Seeds of Indignation" - so gods can now create groups/sites too?

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

Necromancers on the other hand claim a stone slab that a God created which they use to learn about the secrets of life and death.
From what I've seen, these slabs are claimed/created almost always after a necromancer-hopeful begins worshiping the deity that goes on to create it, so I don't think the gods just plant slabs willy-nilly like I dwarf and his plump helmets.

Besides the 2 vampires and 1 were-creature she created, she also created "The Seeds of Indignation" - so gods can now create groups/sites too?
That would be the name of a slab.

The Gods in DF seem to be getting a lot more trolly. Love it.

Sounds like a deity who perfectly sums up just about everything important about this game, minus booze and dwarven stupidity. :p
