Hatching bought eggs
« on: February 17, 2012, 05:17:47 pm »

Is it possible to hatch a egg you bought from a caravan or during the embark?

Also, how can I mod in the possibility to buy Dragon Eggs in the embark?
Thanks

You can't hatch eggs period. You need an egglaying female and a male and a nest box that your dorfs wont loot the eggs out of. If the animal moves the eggs will never hatch after, or sometimes they just wont anyway.

It isn't possible to hatch purchased eggs.

You should be able to buy dragon eggs if you made dragons not be MEGABEASTs by removing that tag. However, that might just make it so that they don't spawn anywhere, so you'd probably also have to add some biome tokens or COMMON_DOMESTIC.

It's been tried, and no amount of modding has allowed bought eggs to be hatched - nor spontaneously generated eggs via modding.  Greater dwarves have attempted, and the problem of "workshop produced life" still eludes us.

It is, however, possible to transmute.  Syndromes can now impart transformations, so you can take any animal, apply a contact syndrome, and turn it into a dragon or chicken or anything.

Make a stone wall that emits a syndrome, anything walking by it is instantly turned into pigs, due to the syndrome causing transmutation! (Do this for defenses!)

Solids don't work, either, at least in such a solid form. That wall would need to dust or evaporate. Or melt.

Contact works, but you don't actually touch a stone when you walk near or over it.  Only picking it up, or an item made of it.

...You could do a metal similar to steel, and give it a contact syndrome.  It would turn creatures into chickens when it got an embed in the wound.  That actually sounds amazing.

You say chickens ... I picture a sword that when embedded in its victim causes all of the victims blood to boil!

That was already possible... maybe.  I seem to recall some issues with contact and equipment.  But, it's worth a try!
