Do you mean you must be focused to gain bard skills? I haven't experimented much with those, so I guess maybe that's true, but I'm completely sure that it isn't true for any other skills. I mean, I am so completely sure, it's as sure as I am that you move with the arrow keys or the numpad.

AFAIK, if you are not focused, you don't gain exp. Simple as that.

I started noticing it when training weapon skills. Exp would simply not increase when I lost focus.
I can confirm that right after gaining focus, I gained experience again. This is the case for any skills, yeah...

So I believe for my adventurer, I have to be focused for any skill to increase.
The game's mechaniks are deep, so maybe it's more that just that. Maybe it's related to the character's personnal traits...
