Stone Dumping Problem
« on: December 11, 2007, 10:27:00 pm »

So I just mined out an area (using ramps) and now I'm left with a bunch of limestone. The last time I tried mining a vertical area with ramps, the stone boulders were left hanging in midair and no one could reach them to dump them. But now, I try to dump these boulders and the dwarves avoid them like the plauge! I've successfully dumped some fifty or so other boulders in several garbage zones, but they just won't pick up the ones left by carving ramps! Please tell me what n00bish thing I'm doing so I can just build my "Tower of Screw-Pumping" already.

Thanks in advance, hopefully someone here has had (and solved) the same problem.
By the way, I'm still running 33a, if that's any help. I also have a number of idle dwarves with all hauling on.

EDIT: Spelling.

EXTRA EDIT: Another idea: some sort of pathfinding problem? The dwarves don't want to go down the ramps for some reason, and need stairs to carry the boulders up?

EVEN MORE EDIT: Shoot, not stairs that these dwarves want. Maybe they're just too lazy to haul garbage across z-levels.

Well, if I do update, I don't want to run into any game-skewering glitches. Which version would be best to update to, can you be certain that would fix it, and how exactly would I preserve my fortress (copy the data folder?)

If your farms have a layer of solid rock above them, 33e. If not, 33d.

Installation is easy - make a new folder for the new version, copy the save folder over. Optionally, edit init.txt to preserve your settings.

There was a bug fix sometime since 33a that specifically fixed this stone and ramp problem. I guess you will find out if it retroactively fixes the stones!

Finally, make sure you allow refuse outside to be dumped.

Besides, if you run into any problems you can revert back to 33a which is still sitting in its orginal folder. I doubt you will need to, though.

Thanks all, trying the fix shortly.

EDIT: Frickandahalf, they still won't grab the stone. It'll drop a level when I carve out a channel (or ramp) but they still won't dump it.

Have you set dwarves to collect refuse from outside?

No I haven't, and if that's all I had to do then I'll feel like an idiot. I'll check the wiki, but if you could post how incase I don't find it that would be wonderful.

EDIT: Nevermind, it worked! Yay! I'm an idiot!
