Graphical improvements in 34.01 for Modders?
« on: February 14, 2012, 07:27:05 am »

Are there any graphical improvements in 34.01 that increase the possibilities for tileset makers or 3D visualizers like Stonesense?  This might be a question best answered by Baughn.

I know that there was some stuff in the works for SDL something-or-other and I heard something once about increasing the control the tileset maker has over differentiating the tiles.  Any truth to these rumors?

Well, kinda.

The changes were fixes to the Truetype -system, which basically would make lots of tiles currently used for text to be available for other purposes. Without Truetype the game uses the tileset to draw text, and if any of the character tiles were changed the text would be unreadable. Now that Truetype works (or at least should work) more stable those tile are free to be used for other purposes.

You know, they could teach maths like this at school. "There are 105 dwarves in a settlement. A goblin invasion appears and 67 die. Then a migrant wave..."

I think I said that on my thread before I knew for sure,
but no, TTF isn't actually fixed in this version.

So really, there isn't anything better graphically about this version.

In fact, it's somewhat worse, because of the way animated creatures are now handled.
There is no longer a distinction between zombies and skeletons.
