I actually picked an area with no trees and an aquifer recently to play with harder settings. Odd part was, there's a large amount of flowing underground water, but no actual aquifer. I noticed this in another place I picked with an aquifer, though I didn't dig as far down.

I'm super eager to play with fixing the aquifer problem, as it was a real pain for me for a long time. Having to be careful with wood is just great too. Not having any stone right away sounds like a lot of fun, so don't give up!
