Silage! (Feed for animals)
« on: February 13, 2012, 12:38:43 am »

I would like to suggest that we get an option, maybe through the Farmer's Workshop, to harvest grass and turn it into hay that can be stockpiled and fed to animals either underground or when there's no pasture land available. All the framework is there already and this really makes sense!

Makes sense, but I would rather grow it as a crop than gather it from the great scary outdoors. Maybe cavewheat would be sufficiently delicious?

I have always wished for something like this.

An ability to put animals in pens and have dedicated dwarfs feed them.

Would be soo much easier then walling off areas and pasturing each individual animal and all their kids.

Why not have feed be produced from proccessing cave wheat, which produces seeds, which can be ground into flour or planted, and the stalks, which can be bundled into bales and stored, then put into a building which the animals go to every so often to satisfy the need to feed?

Silage is different from hay.

Silage is essentially fermented grass or other plant matter. Hay is long grass that has been cut and baled.

And then there's straw, which isn't used as feed (it's sometimes used as a supplement), but is used for stuffing in furniture, rooves etc.

But you really want to be feeding you cattle on fresh grass (which is what makes New Zealand's cattle products superior to America's). If hay etc does get implemented, it would be nice to add in that detail.

Being able to make thatched rooves would be nice, but that relies on stone being a harder to get resource.

Having food scraps would be nice, since you would be able to use them as pig feed.

Wheat stalks actually make straw, which as I said earlier isn't feed.

Iv seen people who haven't had a redheaded person in their family for quite a while, and then out of nowhere two out of three of their children have red hair.

Along this same lines, there are things like clover of alfalfa that could be used for pen/pasture areas after they have been trampled to death. Some kind of ability set up to be able to reseed an area so that it is more resistant to trampling and/or regrows faster would also be nice. There was also a really good TED talk about using mushrooms as a way of repairing topsoil that has been damaged. Seems like that is another way that pre-existing Dwarven agriculture could be expanded to deal with the bare earth situation. Ideally, this would even allow you to take rocky areas and turn them into farmlands, even if the process took a long time. It would be a nice option for people wanting to build long term sustainability of their forts.
