Do arrows have a travel speed?
« on: February 12, 2012, 06:10:39 am »

If so, would it be possible to be so fast that you could literally move away from a fired arrow?

All projectiles immediately travel to their destination. Dodging and such, however, are decided by creature's skills and stats. For example, with high enough agility, kinesthetic sense and dodging (Probably some more) it is even possible to pat the arrow WITH UR BARE HANDS while it's flying at you.

I'm fairly sure they are instantaneous. Although, the person who fired them is frozen in place for a certain amount of time after firing, so it's not exactly overpowered. :P

In fortress mode, you can pause the game and use the single step key to advance time one frame at a time. You can see individual bolts flying through the air. They seem to move about one tile per frame. That doesn't seem instantaneous to me, unless I'm missing something.

Dang, I was hoping with insane speed you could interact with airborne projectiles. Return to sender, address unknown, no such number, no such soul!

Addendum: Ffff. !!Science!! is needed.

Well, I was thinking more of adventure mode... I'm pretty sure they are instant there. Now I'm wondering.
I'll have to test this.

I'm pretty sure they aren't. Sometimes I can see them.

They aren't instant, they're just too fast to interact with in any way.

Could it be the game logic is instant but an animation is drawn for aesthetic purposes?

They are instant in adventure mode only to avoid cheap dodges by just happening to have the phase alignment correct.  In dwarf mode, that isn't as important as keeping the game running when there are projectiles constantly in flight.  Once we get to combat reaction moments, the adventure mode situation will probably be altered somewhat, but I'm not sure we'll ever be able to move entirely away from instantaneous adv projectiles.  If movement to a tile is not instantaneous, then we can do it, but I'm not sure if that'll have weird side effects itself.
