More one thread whining about toady... ::) I'm tired of these kind of threads like "Can I haz multiplayar?''  or "3D graphics! WoW has 3D why dwarf fortress doesn't?".

We need some sticked FAQ thread with answers to such questions as they repeat almost every few days.
1. Why DF is not open source?
2. Why Toady doesn't hire more coders?
3. Why DF is not multithreaded?
4. Why DF doesn't have 3D graphics?
5. Why DF is not multiplayer?
6. There wasn't any release last 3 months, is DF still developed?
And the like...

@eataTREE: I disagree it would take so much of an effort for both sides to teach new people DF code. Look at all these guys who are figuring things in DF memory and making utilities. Also some guy on the Bug Tracker fixed at least 2 bugs by PATCHING MACHINE CODE!
It was 8 bugs, actually, and I was only able to do that because I'm one of the "guys who are figuring things in DF memory and making utilities" and I know some of the tricks to locating machine code (one of which is to have a massive amount of patience).

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Yeah I was thinking there is more, but was only sure about 2 bugfixes. You are awesome, thank you for your hard work!

One step ahead of you; though it's not stickied yet, I took the liberty of creating just such a thread.  I'll PM Toady to see if he considers it sticky-worthy.  I quite agree that a simple stickied post with these and similar questions answered would be enormously helpful in reducing the "once a month newbie" questions like this.

I read threads like this only to laugh at the groupthink and instinctive reactions.

Great job!
I am happy to see this idea realized. Hopefully Toady will accept this.

Now when someone makes a thread with such question we could just link him to the FAQ, instead of discussing it over and over and answering the very same arguments in every thread.

I read threads like this only to laugh at the groupthink and instinctive reactions.

Well despite the topic coming up every time the release drags, I hope at least someone learns something each time. One thing I've noticed lately on gaming forums (mostly not this one) is that fans have nearly no insight into how difficult software development is to get right, how much external business pressures act against "getting it right" and a general sense of entitlement and impatience.

Now, to be fair with bug-ridden releases and more and more DLC some of this is warranted...

That said, DF is a completely different beast of course, where "right" is a single man's (well him, his brother, and his cat's) vision with zero artistic compromise.

(caution boring dev speak coming up)
Also, I have been lucky enough to land a job in an extremely well run company that has only a few very competent engineers* (all on site!) working on a project not 1% as complex as DF, with all the fancy tools and processes that let us rapidly and safely deploy features and bug fixes. Even with all this we struggle with integration issues on occasion and have to be very careful to isolate important fixes. The point I'm getting at is that from this perspective I am nearly always blown away with the speed and scope of Toady's development.

*everyone but me, I mean ;)
