Do underground water sources run out?
« on: February 08, 2008, 12:59:00 pm »

I managed to hit a underground water source. I drained it for 3 months into a stream area, and its still going strong.

Do they ever run out or do they just keep re-generating water?

Underground rivers seem to be limitless, at least the ones fed by waterfall. Cave lakes I've never tried to drain.

Do you have numbers displaying depth?

If so, and if it is a lake and not a river, the numbers should be getting lower and lower on the top level if it is a finite amount.  At least thats what happens with my magma source.  It is definitely a finite source there, and as I drain it, the top level gets lower and lower.

Is there anyway to turn that off so they can be drained out.

Ive tried 3 different maps now, to build a fort with a river that freez's so that i can divert it, and every time i get down like 2 or 3 tiles from the frozen river, and all it is is underground water all over the place. I cant even dig my fortress. Its pretty damn annoying  :(

Sounds like you're embarking onto a map with an aquifer. There are methods to deal with aquifers, as outlined in the wiki.

If your on a map which freezes you can just expose the aquifer and it will freeze then you can dig past it (dont forget to wall it up for when it unfreezes)
