Bone weapons?
« on: February 07, 2012, 11:16:13 pm »

Is there a way to make weapons out of bone without requiring a custom reaction, since I believe those prevent quality modifiers?

I'm using the bones of a custom creature with heavier than normal bones, so I'd prefer to limit it to that specific bone if possible.

custom reactions do recognize quality modifiers.

Must have read about an older version then.  Now to figure out how to not only do the custom reaction (easy enough to find here, so not asking), but limit it to specific weapons that can't be made out of metal, with a specific type of bone, if that's possible.

ITEM_HARD means it can be made from metal
ITEMS_BARRED means it can be made from bone

You can use the REACTION_CLASS tagging on your material to make sure only that one material is available for the reaction... I think...

I'm not sure how robust the system is with something like bones.

bone armors are automatically recognized in the craft workshop and ranged bone weapons in bowyer's workshop I think... Not sure what'd happen with bone weapons.

If you can inject a customized work order into the game's memory (e.g. using Dwarf Foreman), the "make weapon" job does know how to use bone as a reagent (it has a special case to only require 1 bone for making crafts, boots, gloves, helms, ammo, weapons, and blocks) and should work properly.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
