How do you deal with aggressive wild animals? Such as Badgers killing some of my animals and it looks like there are more of them and every now and then they become enraged and attack things. I looked at military but I don't really know if that is what I need. Help would be much appreciated :)

1. Cage traps,
2. Weapon traps,
3. Military,
4. Hunters, luck and a buttload of ammo.

The military screen is actually much easier to work with than a lot of people seem to think. You should be able to figure it out by messing about for a few minutes, but just ask if you need help.

Locked (forbidden) doors are a pretty good defense too. They don't help your woodcutters or whatever outside but they will save the main fort from pretty much anything but sieges and certain mega beasts.

I found bringing along a single hunter/military Dwarf solves this problem. Pump some ranged combat skills into a Dwarf, give a Dwarf with no "real" professon (like a social/trading Dwarf) novice ranks in Ambushing and you should get some free ranger gear.

The Hunter might not genocide the whole population but it does a good job of "scattering" the animals away from your entrace and can supply you with some meat. After a few months you should also have a fine military Dwarf who can help with defences. More hunters means less wild-life, and perhaps a few less ambushes.

Constructions and channeling work as well.  If you have stone or logs to spare just throw up a rough stone wall or wooden palisade.  You can also make a 2 or wider tile trench through channeling and just mass remove the ramps fort-side.  Area denial and bottlenecks plus traps should serve you well.

I'm surprised magma hasn't been mentioned yet.

I tend to do a set up like this (not my idea, taken from the wiki)

Code: [Select]
+++++O+++++
+++++O+++++
+++^^O^^+++
+++^^O^^+++
OOOOO^OOOOO
+++^^O^^+++
+++^^O^^+++
+++++O+++++
+++++O+++++

+ = floor or natural ground
O = constructed wall
^ = trap

Just scatter a bunch of these outside, close to the edges of your maps. Stone traps are fine, but you should at least try to get one weapon trap in the center in case the stones don't quite work They can also double as a crude anti-goblin defense. They aren't 100% effective, but they are easy to build, and will keep most roaming animals away from your woodcutters or plant gatherers etc. Plus require little to no maintenance, can take out herds at a time, and no dwarves are at risk (unless they go out to replace the traps with a half broken enraged badger man standing on it)
