Keeping track of items

Say some traders come along and have a high demand for metal instruments. I have platinum, so I make some platinum instruments. Or at least I assume they did while I wasn't looking, and then I can't find them anywhere. They might be in some random bin somewhere, and in the trading dialogue you cannot select the individual contents of bins.
Is there some way to search for specific items and zoom to their location? I have a bookkeeper, but I can't for the life of me find instruments in the stocks screen.

EDIT: Sorry, had to answer quickly, anyways, it should be in the crafts section. Pressing tab also helps.

If you are looking solely for trading, when moving goods to the depot, press "s" (I think) and start typing "platinum". It will search all items you own for ones that have that text in their name and will include all containers that contain items with that name too, so it should list all bins that have your platinum instruments.

The stocks screen isn't very organized. Every specific thing is spread out in a list, not in alphabetical order. I cannot find crafts, but I can find specific types of crafts listed in various places. Can I search for an item by name WITHOUT the trading screen?

i don't think you can.
But if you're looking for the location of a specific item: go to your stocks screen, find the category of the item (instruments is halfway on the 3rd page), hit tab to list all your items individually, select the item you were looking for, hit 'z'.

Also: organize your stockpiles to accept your platinum instruments close to your trade depot. Or disable bins in that stockpile to keep it from mingling with random crap.

also may be subject to mandates. check and see if your sorting by mandates and your nobles screen to see if someone forbid the trading of instruments or platinum items.
