My first confusion is that both male and female dogs are simply called dogs on all the screens. The only way I could tell them apart was on the embark screen. Is there an easier way to see which is male and which is female other than looking at each one's description?

My second confusion is about war dogs. Do they breed, or only "normal" dogs breed?

War dogs are just dogs that have been trained for battle. They'll still breed.

As far as differentiating by gender, the (v)iew menu for when you're looking at individuals should show a gender symbol. If you want something a little more concrete, I guess you could open the raws and change the caste name for female dogs to "bitch" (which when not used as a profanity is meant to refer to female dogs).

You can check gender in the [z]->[animals] screen.

But they are not as good as wardogs that have been castrated with the b => D => C menu they are lighter than normal dogs and more agile. also dog testacles are a dwarfen delecacy you need a animal taimer with a pickaxe for the menu to work

If looking through each dog's description in your unit's menu seems too time consuming you can go into your raw folders and add

[CASTE:FEMALE]
   [CASTE_NAME:bitch:bitches:bitches]
   [FEMALE]
[CASTE:MALE]
   [CASTE_NAME:sire:sires:sires]
   [MALE]
[SELECT_CASTE:ALL]

to the dog raws and it should show them based on gender. You are going to need to make a new world for this though.

Point of Order: Sire is only used to describe a father dog and only in a family situation.

the proper name for a male dog is dog, and for a female dog it is bitch.
For a father-dog it is sire, and for a mother-bitch, it is dam.
