Units getting stuck in Magma Glass Furnaces
« on: August 29, 2007, 09:46:00 am »

I lose lots of units when they deliver sand to a magma glass furnace and for some reason get stuck on the square in the rightmost column, middle row (the one that needs to be over lava). They go out there for whatever reason, and then spam a lot of "unable to find path" messages before they die of thirst.

Is your furnace encased in rock? I'd try digging at least one square all around the furnace to make sure he don't "fall" into a hole made by the furnace itself.

Otherwise, I've heard that would be a bug in itself, though I never managed to emulate it in my own games.

Read The Wiki (specifically, the bottom of that page)

Also, since this is a bug, you can use teleport.exe to teleport them a few tiles away from the workshop.

I already did, it didn't tell me anything I hadn't learned from the forums anyway. teleport.exe works for now though.

You can granite over the tile to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Wouldn't I have to demolish the workshop first? And that tile needs to be magma for the workshop to be able to be built there in the first place...

Whenever someone gets stuck over the magma, I assign a couple war dogs to them.  Eventually one of them will come to the same square and your dwarf will step aside.  Now you have a dog stuck in his place, but at least the dog won't die or spam messages.

You can't assign dogs to nobles, children, or heroes, but in that case I conscript my animal trainer and send him to a nearby square.  The animal pack that follows will have the same effect.

The biggest problem I have is when lava creatures appear and kill something over the magma.  The corpse is inaccessible, so it produces a lovely miasma cloud for all my smelter dwarves to work in.

You don't have to demolish the workshop to granite it. You just need to mine it out if it needs to be rebuilt for any reason.
