Stink trade depot
« on: August 18, 2007, 11:55:00 am »

Well, I metioned that before in another topic.
Now I know the reason: meat will get rotten soon in trade depots...

I'm not sure whether it is a bug, but it seems we need some methods to keep meat fresh. There's no way to know when food will be rotten, until they are rotten.   ;) You don't want to buy any rotting goods, do you?

If the road to your fort is realy long(no bridge yet and only crossing is way off) or your depot is very deep(post chasm), then sometimes the food rots while they are still on their way to the fort. Does the caravan charge you for food that rot on the way to you? I didn't have a chance to check because i use them as a dump for all my bone crafts and they leave with 10k profit so...

Caravan will stay for 1 month I think.
Maybe that's how long meat will get rotten?

Here's what you do, have a meat/cheese stockpile near your trade depot. You can even have it set to feed your primary pile using the "Take from Stockpile" feature.

Disable Mineral, Wood, Furniture, and possibly Animal Hauling when you get the "Merchants have arrived" message. This will free up haulers that can handle the food.

Trade away. Watch as your food haulers transfer the perishables. There's also a possibility that some of your haulers may be tied up with "Bring Item To Depot" tasks, so you can always unselect any Pending items from the Trade Depot screen after you've traded.
