Less than 15 minutes into the show, a whole bunch had left offended from up near the stage.  Carlin joked that they obviously didn't know what they were getting into.  There were tons of empty seats, so we snuck down into the front row.  My friend was a huge Carlin fan and knew all his material by heart.  He started reciting the punchlines to all the jokes a few seconds ahead of time, not exactly shouting but in a raised voice.  After a few times, Carlin looked at him and said "Hey!  I didn't fly all the fucking way out from Los Angeles to have some smartass kid recite all my lines for me, so STFU!"  I'm paraphrasing.  I don't remember exactly what he said, just that it was funny.  He seemed pretty cool about it, too.  Mock indignation.  As if he enjoyed the opportunity to interact with the audience a bit.

Probably one of the best linguistic comedians in history.

Shit is an awesome word.

That's awesome, Salmon :b Wish I'd have had the opportunity, but I was a bit far away and not in the league required when it comes to money to fly across the Atlantic and now he's just dust. Or bones, in case he weren't cremated.

Did he take much material from Lenny Bruce? I know he quoted Bruce as one his major influences, and his "words you can't say" was pretty much lifted entirely from Bruce's act. Definitely in the same style, even if the rest of his material was original - A style I wish more comedians would emulate, heh.

Carlin was really a great man, not just a comedian but a philosopher as he grew older. All of his books are pretty entertaining, especially if you grab the audiobooks which are entirely read by him.

I fondly remember his narration of the Thomas movies. That was quite enjoyable.
