Stuff growing in my moat...
« on: January 23, 2012, 06:04:26 pm »

I have a moat around my settlement to help with defense. However I now notice I've got some trees growing in it here and there. How would that affect my moat? Invaders can't climb trees, can they?

Falling enemies can get stuck in trees, but as far as I know they can't climb.

The top of a tree doesn't count as a proper floor space.

Trees only sprout to full size if the square is not completely flooded. A full moat or one that has been logged and paved will be no challenge.

Magma also prevents unsightly and troublesome plantlife from encroaching.

So does one floored over. Though that's a bit drastic in most cases.

if it's a serious problem (and it shouldn't be), just put a road on the moat.  It'll prevent things from growing.  Or you could get really hardcore and dig that moat down to the first rock layer you hit.

That is an insane and dangerous plan.  I approve wholeheartedly.

Half on-topic, What if he digs the moat down another layer and then spends the time to rebuild it with fortifications? That should stop plants and trees as well as confounding goblins.

If you dig a ramp in your moat it'd prevent things from growing since nothing grow on ramps. As a bonus you now have a 2z moat.

a paved road would work as well as a floor and is considerably cheaper to make

paved roads are considered buildings and trolls will happily destroy them. Note that paved roads have quality modifier and god forbid you if it's masterworkly designed for legendary architects are hard to come by lest alone allowing them to throw tantrums.
