Taming Hydrae
« on: January 23, 2012, 07:55:32 pm »

So in my kennel there is an option to tame the Hydra that I just caught in a cage.  I assume that as the Hydra has a title it has quite likely killed dwarves in the past and would make a poor pet, however if I by some chance were to get a second Hydra, is there any way to breed them so I could tame the babies?

Hydras are lacking the proper child tags, so in vanilla DF they are unable to breed regardless of how many you have.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

You'll never know unless you try - I caught a hydra in a 0.31.14 fortress and it was perfectly peaceful once tamed. The fact that the creature has a title is meaningless - pretty much all megabeasts have titles from killing stuff during worldgen, but you should be fine as long as its kill list doesn't include dwarves from your home civilization.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
