Good point for the most part, but why floodgates? Doors are usually preferable, unless you really need more than 2 of them side-by-side or you specifically want a delay.

I've been using lowts of axes and iron bolts. Apparently, though, iron bolts are absolutely terrible when fired from Projectors, Infantry, Puppy Constructed.
I had twenty dwarves emptying the entire fort's magazine of iron bolts into two trolls outside the fort, but the bolts were just causing skin bruises, and occasionally tearing fat. So I've upped the puppy bone to iron.
It's also fun firing pieces of dead puppy out of a dead puppy.

AFAIK The damage/penetration of a bolt depends solely on the material the bolt is made of, not the crossbow firing it. Making iron crossbows will only benefit you if you run out of bolts and smack them with the crossbow.
