I'm just really not seeing how this is going to ever matter much unless you are purposefully minting coins with the intention of selling them. Maybe when the first caravan or two arrives, sure, but at that point it's just an issue of copper vs. silver. Silver's about as easy to find as copper, so it's no great horror if they have the same trade value as coins.

One would expect that metals that are at least theoretically harder to find(silver *is* supposed to be rarer than copper, isn't it?) should have a greater value when traded, whether as coins or otherwise. Seems silly than a half-pound of copper is worth the same as a half-pound of platinum in any given situation.

Whether or not they are regularly used as trade goods is hardly the point. If they aren't supposed to be traded, then they could be treated the same as masterpiece items, no tradzorz for joo! But since they *can* they need some sort of reason to their value, and it's only reasonable for harder-to-find metals to be more expensive than more common metals, regardless of their shape or form. It's alright if your coins are worth less than crafts, pound-per-pound, they aren't really worth anything except the metal they're printed on outside your fortress, after all.

Look, all I'm trying to say here is that it's just not a big issue. Yeah it's wierd and it should be fixed at some point down the line, but in the meantime it's probably not going to make a real difference anywhere so who cares?

I didn't bother reading the back and forth -- so can somebody clarify?  Are ALL coin stacks valued at 1* now?  Or is it just the smaller stacks?  The value resolution can't handle smaller piles, but a stack of 500 platinum should be worth more than a stack of 500 copper.

Yes, all coins are worth 1* each now. 500 copper coins have a value of 500*; 500 platinum coins have a value of 500*.

Regardless, a stack of platinum coins should be worth far more than a stack of copper coins. In any situation.

Also, just because it's a problem you don't care about doesn't mean it's not a problem.

...idiot.

It's clear and obvious that e.g. Gold coins should be worth more each than copper coins. If anyone wasn't clear that was the design, Toady just confirmed it should be that way, eventually.

Therefore this is a bug and makes complete sense to report here.

Whether it's an important bug at this point in alpha testing is a matter of opinion, but is also irrelevant - just report the bug and don't criticize other people for reporting the bug. Somehow the topic seems to have drifted via misunderstanding to arguing about how important the bug is, which is double-silly because even if one thinks the bug isn't important at this point, surely arguing about the importance of the bug, has negative priority.  ;)

Congratulations, PvK. You're the smartest person on this thread (except Toady, of course). Not that that was probably too difficult.

I never said that the bug wasn't a problem or that it shouldn't be reported. I just commented on a side note Satyr had mentioned and it kind of escalated from there.
