Computer Problems
« on: January 28, 2012, 06:04:55 pm »

hey nerds i need comp help

Recently, aka starting yesterday I've been having bluescreens on my brand new computer. Brand new as in Christmas. What happens is sometimes when I'm watching videos on youtube and I click to go to a new video, the display drivers stop responding for a minute (causing a freeze and a black flash) and then come back working normally. The next video I click will crash my computer and give me a bluescreen. This has only started yesterday and happened twice but fuck I don't want to experiment to see if it'll happen again!

I really have no idea what would cause it, and I don't really even know what a display driver is. Does it have something to do with my monitor??

Also, what relevant computer specs should I be posting and how do I see what they are.

very very unlikly (but not impossible) to be caused by the monitor.

most likely bad drivers, or video card overheating or underpowered.

Don't tell anyone that you can see their shadows. If they hear you telling anyone, if you let them know that you know of them, they will get you.

The more specs, the better.

OS, video card type, memory installed, browser you were using.

Particularly the video card, since then it's video driver time, since that's the best first step possibility.

I've experienced that with the latest certified drivers from Nvidia coupled with Firefox can cause the driver to stop responding for a few seconds. Updating to the latest beta drivers though has so far put a stop to it.

I've never seen this myself, but here are what I think are the most likely culprits:
  • Bad drivers.  Check your computer manufacturer's website for the latest drivers.  Barring that, check both your graphics card and display manufacturers websites for drivers.  Could be worth trying experimental (beta), old, or generic drivers.
  • Bad hardware.  Sometimes hardware is defective.  Could be the video card, CPU, etc.  Contact your computer manufacturer's support line for assistance.
  • Bad plugins.  Try a different browser.  Make sure you have the most up-to-date flash plugins.  Try YouTube HTML5 if flash won't cooperate with you.
  • Something completely unrelated.  You'd be surprised just how some things can affect other things.  Customer support is your friend.
It'd be easier to advise you if you gave us more information.  The make and model of the computer would help.  The specs would be nice, but we can look those up if you give the make and model.  The name and versions of the browser, flash plugin, display driver, and graphics driver might help.  When in doubt, customer service really is your friend.  They're paid to make you happy.
