Let me first say that you don't absolutely need a higher resolution for Ironhand. I have 1280x800 (so less than the 1440 rephikul suggested) and to be honest I never noticed that is apparently a too low resolution.

As for an attempt at an unbiased evaluation of the graphics (as if that is even possible):
Mayday: Keeps the ASCII feel of the original graphics
Phoebus: More graphical than Mayday's, iconic style [example]
Ironhand: The only 18px set (others are 16px), more realistic, darker tones [example]

Sadly I can't give any examples of Mayday because I'm not that familiar with it and don't want to embarrass myself by linking you to a vanilla ASCII fortress. :/

My Tileset Resizer thread has some screenshots that might help you compare the different tilesets.
The mayday tileset is out of date though.
Edit: I added the current Mayday tileset.
