Wanderlust: Rebirth

OK, since the other thread is a giveaway and I don't want to make it harder for hemmingjay by starting a discussion amid people wanting to enter for the contest, I'll give it its own topic.

First of all, the game can be found at http://www.wanderlustgame.com/. I was reading over the feature list, and it sounds interesting enough, except for this part:

  • Fight well and your group will receive damage and health bonuses!
  • Fight poorly and your group will receive penalties to their abilities!

If anyone here has experience with the game, how does this work out? Badly implemented, I could see it wrecking the game, since as soon as you do poorly, you're penalized for doing poorly, encouraging a downward spiral that you can't get out of because the game is actively penalizing you for... well, not being able to overcome increasingly bad odds against you.  The flip side would also be true - initial success simply makes it easier to continue being successful, reducing any challenge the game offers.

So, anyone know how this works out?

I like the sound of it, and it does make sense. If you have enough momentum to crush them, the tide of battle is obviously on your side and vice versa, it fleshes out the idea of morale and the mental state of everyone (including the opposition) to me.

BUT, I do see your point. This is just something that we really can't predict until we experience it ourselves.
