Brooks are supposed to be gravel and rocks with water running through them, that's why people can walk on them.

Of course, that doesn't explain why digging a channel out produces deep water below. It's like a crust of rocks is on top of a brook.

Well, if we assume that a channel is 10 feet deep (as it mines out the cube below) and a brook is < 2 feet deep, then digging a channel will result in deep water, no?  It just happens to be deeper than the brook.

But yes, visually, brooks are like rivers but with a rocky crust.

I just think of channeling out a brook as being like removing the sand/gravel/whatever that it runs through, so it makes sense that it's deep there.

code:

Think of it like this:

~~~~~~~~~~    <-- Shallow water (Brook tiles)
0.o0%.0%.% \  <-- Loose rock/gravel that water flows through
.O%o0o%.0O  >- One Z level (7/7 water under brook)
OoO0O.%o%0 /
########## \  <-- Solid rock
##########  >- One Z level
########## /
Then channel out part of it:
~~~~~~~~~~    <-- Shallow water (Brook tiles/Open space)
0.o~~~~%.% \  <-- Loose rock/gravel with channel
.O%~~~~.0O  >- One Z level (7/7 water under brook)
OoO~~~~o%0 /
########## \  <-- Solid rock
##########  >- One Z level
########## /

The "shallow water" is the visible brook tile, the "loose gravel/rock" is the 7/7 water underneath the brook tile. I know it doesn't quite play out that way in the game, but it's a good way to think of it and not hurt your head too much  :)

Maybe the water under the brook tiles should start with stones spawned in it? Or would that just shove them around?
