Empty Castles
« on: January 07, 2012, 02:06:28 pm »

Hey there. It's been while since I last played Dwarf Fortress adventure mode and for some reason every castle I visit is empty and full of animals so I can't get any companions. Is this a bug from the most recent version or is it an effect of me genning a world where a massive evil mountain range takes up a third of the map?

The inhabitants were probably killed by monsters from the huge evil mountain. Also, if it's an old world, there are hundreds more chances for the castle's heroes to be killed. You can still get peasant companions.

I have an 'Old' world and the only castle dweller on one continent is a law-giver whose finger was bitten off by a cyclops. I asked him about the surroundings and he recounted the various monsters who killed every soldier, including Ikan Greatesthero, slain by a mirthful frolicking titan.

Beware abandoned castles in untamed wild savannas though. I took my 20-strong army of sword/axe/hammerman into a abandoned castle to sleep the night.

Me > Ok guys. head to the keep.
Axeman 1 > OH ITS A HONEY BADGER MUST KILL NOW
Axeman 1, farther off > KILLED THE HONEY BADGER, BUT THERE'S A GROUP OF GIANT LIONS BEHIND THE WALL HERE!

Due to their severe hatred of wildlife, all 20 of my soldiers died before making it to the keep, trying to take on giant lions, rhinos, and giant giraffes one-on-one.

I challenge you to a game of 'Hide the Sausage', to the death.

At least your soldiers followed you for a while. Mine just turned back the moment I reached the mountain ranges.

If you live on evil planet there is more of a chance of fortresses being deserted.  However, this is more likely caused by the world being older.

Less pre-genned history has always shown fewer abandoned castles for me.

I found a bunch of abandoned fortress of unknown race, I think it might've been Orc territory. I tried to sleep after being mauled by a sea monster, but when I woke up and left the keep I was slaughtered by a pack of raptors and a bunch of mandrills. There was nobody to talk to in any of the forts, which were away from any society of any of the other races and even then the fortresses were far apart from each other.
