Are elves (and elven ambushes/sieges) trap avoiders?
« on: January 07, 2012, 02:04:32 pm »

I'm thinking about sticking it to the filthy nature loving hippies but it would be nice to know if they can get caught in cages to be used for... experiments... or if I need to actually set up a military and whether it will be worthwhile. I searched the wiki but couldn't find it. Thanks in advance!

From what I recall, they only avoid traps that were observed earlier by a visiting Diplomat.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Thank you, I'll remember to kill all of the diplomats they send!

In the current version, Elves don't send diplomats :(

Although I'm not certain, I think it was that any sentient that sees a trap and leaves the map, tells it's civilization about that one trap.  Don't know about now though.

Although I have gotten goblins (not trolls) to wait outside my traps, instead of running through them, after a siege or two.

I had goblins chill outside the traps at first, neccessitating a chained duckling on the other side of the bridge as bait. After a few sieges they've just started trying to kool-aid through with predicatable results.

From my !!PHILOSOPHY!! fortress, I found out something weird when I was testing out the best methods to procure Goblin prisoners.

One of the trap set ups:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

In the centre is an antman baby. Goblin snatchers first tried the western most entrance, but after discovering the first trap, tried the north, south then the east respectively, but once all of the cage traps had been discovered, they pretty much just chose the shortest route. Same with ambushers and sieges. Seems like they at least try to avoid traps where alternate routes are possible.
