Freeze traps. Conveniently gathering items afterwards.

So we all know about that special wood that is verry cold. What if I had a corridoor made of the stuff. And a bridge on top that retracts. And water on top. Does this mean that the water would instantly freeze? If so, then it would be a convenient way of making stone structures underground. It would also be a great way to not have to un-fobut all the items that the enemy drops.

Sadly, by all accounts, that special wood doesn't make water freeze.

Either way it would be easier to make a freeze-trap on a terrifying glacier. Natural freezing and stuff.

OR place 2-3 z-levels of 7/7 water on top, and a retractable bridge underneath, into the room you want to flood, like so, in top-bottom order:

WATER LEVELS: 0=Wall, %=Water

0 0 0 0 0
0 % %  0

0 0 0 0 0             x2/3, full of 7/7 water.



BRIDGE LEVEL: 0=Wall X=Bridge

LEVEL TO FLOOD: 0=Wall, Z=Floor D=Door

Upon the enemies entering the room, the lever can be pulled, retracting the bridge and floodingtheroom below, drowning it's contents. A hatch-covered hole could be added to drain water, or one fo the doors could be opened by means of a seperate lever.

Alternatively, the doors/bridge could be linked to a pressure plate, inside the room which the enemies are destined to step on.

You still have the problem that it would be a one-shot weapon since the ice would destroy the Road or Grate or whatever building is built out of mod-nethercap. Floors are constructions and don't interact with temperatures - constructed ice floors can withstand magma!

Either way it would be easier to make a freeze-trap on a terrifying glacier. Natural freezing and stuff.

I once modded in zerglings that would spawn in massive swarms. I made them pretty cold, and began to realise that upon touching water they would freeze and die. Weaponization ensued.

this reminds me of a mantis men mod I had
I once tried to mod in meatsacks that where so cold that would freeze 3x3 square of water, and be accidentally unkillable... I think a dragon died from being pushed apart

wait...
why not add a road... doors or something, locked... as walls for the traps?

Since a square exposed to the sun once remains exposed to the sun regardless of the constructions you build, you probably could accomplish the desired casting effect in a freezing climate. j

Just set up water flow and and a mold and cut away the stone between the cavern and the surface (feel free to rebuild it afterwards, if say, your fort is in the way).  The water will flow everywhere except where the sun ever touched. There it will freeze.

Not as snazzy as the nethercap idea but still

Sphalerite made a fanstastic freeze machine in the succession fort Icemachines. It uses water pressure to flood a room from the side, in which it instantly freezes. I'm the only one who tried it and it worked perfectly.

It's only 1-tile-wide though, so you can't freeze wagon caravans whenever those reappear in the game. If you flood a room/hall from below, the width can be arbitrary - 3 tiles is optimal.

Mine is less simple than yours but did happily freeze whole caravans. Forum Topic - Detailed workings.
