Caves contain:

1) "Fun!" (Who doesn't like neat, and 'friendly' exotic animals!?)
2) mushroom forests
3) spider webs for making silk
4) potentially contain candy. (If you go deep enough.)

And most importantly...

If you dig deep enough, the circus comes to town!

The question is thus: would you like to have a hand in my...groundbreaking... research into the uses and potential of slade? All you require is a Curious Underground Structure from which to harvest the necessary materials.

The sieges will grow in size and severity. Give it time.

The caverns hold gems and minerals and silk and huge beasts that are either puffs of air or fortress-ending death machines if you're unlucky. Also there are interesting flora and fauna down there and more than a few poisonous things. If you're lucky you can find small settlements of animal people.

The crossbow squad, 'The Bolts of Fleeing' wouldn't even show up.

Caverns are good for training your militia on unsuspecting crundles and other local wildlife.

Lava is always down there, yep, just keep digging :)

Some other things to do include:

- set up a big wall around your main fort entrance, construct a tower in the middle and place marksdwarves on top to shoot at sieges
- dig out enough rooms for every dwarf to have their own private room, complete with a cabinet, chest, and maybe a statue for bonus happiness
- create an artificial waterfall that sprays mist over a main hallway, cleaning your dwarves and making them happy
- dig to the bottom of the map, find the best metals for arming your militia
- slaughter the elven caravan. die elves die!
- install fortress defense mod and die to sieges over and over

I wouldn't make a BIG tower for housing marksdwarves. Their range actually diminishes the higher they are. A 2-Z tower with fortifications could work...just remember that goblins and elves can shoot through them too (altough it's a lot safer, since you can make an underground access to the fort and take them to the doc).

It's treated as completely normal because this is Dwarf Fortress.  There's absolutely nothing wrong with surrounding yourself with a wall of flames, only to later realize that you're surrounded by a wall of flames.
There's nothing that can't be solved by hurling fifteen roc birds at it.

I've taken to mildly editing a few raws here and there, and taming/training giant war badgers.  I now have a "gladiator" pit, into which naked goblins are thrown.  It's been entertaining.  I also suggest getting magma to the surface, to rid yourself of the excess clutter from goblin sieges.  An atom smasher also works well. Most of my work has been keeping the map clean, since it really irritates me.  Another simple way to entertain yourself is to get every industry started... Trapping, cheesemaking, soapmaking, cooking... And at the same time, you can see how many legendary dorfs you can get to.
