Is there a particular reason rectangular graphics bother people beyond baseless personal preference?  Mind that's a reason in itself, there's still nothing behind it.

Rectangular tilesets distort such that circles look less circular and squares don't look like squares. This annoys me a lot when I'm building megaprojects. Less so when I'm killing goblins.

It technically doesn't count as a derail if it was just a few posts.

Although the primary motivation behind square tilesets is aesthetics/obsessive-compulsive tendencies 99% of the time, I have found that using a square tileset makes it much easier to accurately judge distances, as both horizontal and vertical distance use the same scale.

But yeah. 99% aesthetics/personal preference. I wouldn't call it baseless though.
