How to open/loot chests on the ground?

Sorry, I checked the wiki and Google but couldn't find the answer to this. I used to play Adventurer mode and I was sure there was a way to loot a chest on the ground (say, that you find sitting around a bandit camp or in a lair) but I can't figure out how to do it now...

You can just pillage the chest if it has anything in it. Some chests spawn empty.

Just hit the button to pick up an item, and it'll pull up all the items in the tile you're standing on, including those inside chests and bags.

That's right! If there's an item inside, I'll be able to see it along with the rest of the stuff on the ground when I hit "g", right? The two chests I have come across must have spawned empty, explaining the confusion.

Thanks. Now this elf maid prisoner and bowman and I can continue on our adventures without worrying about missing out.
