Raining Cats and Dogs
« on: May 20, 2008, 05:53:00 pm »

Okay, so I have a floating fortress(Which is mentioned in almost all my topics now since its the base of all my questions.) and am making a bridge to drop all my undesirables off of. You know, the peasants and dwarves you just do NOT need or want. So, while waiting for the walkway to get built(Its a BIG death trap and I wanted it to look nice, so I was very picky about it NEEDING to be bauxite)I decided to start dropping animals off the walkway I had so far for fun, I had enough spare animals lying around anyways. So, everything is going fine getting the "...... has died after colliding with an obstacle!" messages like I should. Now, the drop is from 14 levels above the impact point, so I figure "Hey, a falling cat, or dog, or donkey should kill a peasant right under the fall point." I then put a peasant right where the animals are falling. After about ten minutes of no colliding death messages I go check out whats wrong, I watch the dwarves drop the dog, watch it fall, then watch as the dwarf seemingly CATCHES it and places it on the ground. Now, should this be happening when its that big of a fall or is something wrong here?

Clearly you should have checked their profile and selected someone who was not such a devoted animal-lover  :p

Right now, whenever a unit projectile hits a regular unit, the projectile gets stopped and both creatures become stunned.  Looking at the code section, it seems fixing that is part of all the impalement and slamming into obstacles that's included in Bloat 141.

I think it'd be awesome if Dwarves could catch other falling friendly creatures.  Of course 14 stories would kill both of them.

I had an insane dwarf catch an orphaned dwarf baby once.

Only in DF...

He helped it because they were kindred souls.  They both babble constantly, and they both take off all their clothes at the first available opportunity.

This is one of those awesome things that I think ends up looking more like a feature than a bug.

Just think, people: you could use this as a rapid military deployment scheme. Have one squad of support dwarves posted on the top of a tall tower with 4 bridges in each cardinal direction; have standby squads at the ground level at each of your 4 cardinal directional gates. When ambush/siege/other trouble arises, and you need rapid backup at the south gate; move the soldiers onto the bridge, and FWOOP! Your standby squad catches the support squad (minus a few dwarves who stray too far to the side and become dwarf pudding)... and you're ready (well, almost, they need to recover from the stun) for combat!

...

I'm going to try this. (And fail.)

That may be so, sure it *CAN* be useful, but realistic? I think not. Though with the kitten, maybe.
