foolproof volcano tapping?
« on: January 03, 2012, 10:57:55 pm »

Forgive me if this is common knowledge, but I may have discovered a way to open the side of a volcano without the risk of burning dwarfs.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

V volcano wall
# walls, constructed or natural
. floor
G grates, material doesn't matter
< up stair
> down stair.

Once you're ready to open it up, channel out the two V squares next to the grates.  The magma will fall through the grates allowing the dwarfs time to flee. The stair loop at z+1 takes advantage of magma-pressure to substitute for a door in case of no magma safe materials, and can not be destroyed in event of ‼fun times‼

Your thoughts, Urists?

EDIT: 'without risk' - what was I thinking?

Check my sig, Dwarven Relativity already has a great volcano-tapping method listed.

Perhaps so, but this one is far more elegant.

close three unskilled migrants in a smoothed 3x3 room with a 3-wide drawbridge gate, use test walls (save-scumming really) to determine the difference in frames it takes each dwarf to carve a fortification and name the slower two this number, position them along the 3-wide magma pipe wall and designate the fortification in front of each dwarf using one step/frame to delay the two slower dwarf's jobs by the correct amount.

Simple, safe, compact and flows a lotta magma
