Well, I think we've come to the conclusion that it was the breastplates not covering the arms and such. Your best bet is candy breastplates with steel maille. Candy is rediculously rigid, so it works well for breastplates, but the rigidity along with it's lightness makes it less so for maille. Steel maille will absorb blunt attacks better while giving protection against pretty much everything.
