Antec Kuhler Problems
« on: January 06, 2012, 09:23:39 pm »

So, I installed a new Antec Kuhler water cooling system, 920. I now get the error that my CPU fan has failed, causes by the fan not rotating fast enough, 600 rpm. My keyboard is now screwed up when the computer boots, so I can't go into the BIOS. Any help?

Does the keyboard function alright after the system boots up?  I'm slightly worried the cooling system in installed improperly.  That could explain the fan functioning improperly or the fan functioning properly and the OS not realizing that.  It's possible that if the system was installed improperly, the motherboard or some other relatively important component was damaged.  I'm assuming that the keyboard works in OS but not in BIOS and I'm totally guessing as to why.  If that's the case, then it's a bit odd...I'm not used to messing with hardware like this, though, so I don't really know what I'm talking about...  Anyway, start by checking whether the system is installed correctly.  It might be as simple as a connection related to the fan is loose and causing your problems.

600 rpm on your fan is very, very low. If you're not running adequate power to the fan, it will not spin up to max. (Mine is currently doing 1300 RPM.)

I don't know jack about cooling systems, but what kind of power requirements does it have? Have you overshot your PSU capacity?

Yep, overshot it to death. 700 watts to my 300. Wish the box said that.

Don't feel bad. I bought a video card I didn't have the power to run, that just arrived today. Hope your hardware is ok after that level of inconsistent voltage.

I skipped that possibility in my last post because I was assuming you already checked that.  Since neither the Antec page on this product nor the manual available from the same page seem to show this spec for some reason, it really is reasonable that you wouldn't have noticed it.

The hardware should be fine.  I'm betting there's no circuit anywhere in a computer that doesn't have tolerance for these things built in.  When I'm designing circuits, anyway, I always build safeties into them.  Clever use of inductors, resistors, and capacitors are usually used in sensitive circuits to protect them from exactly this sort of situation.  For engineers anyway, it definitely pays to assume Murphy's Law is always in effect.

So, what now?  Buy a new power supply and hope it doesn't fry any existing components or return the cooling system in favor of something you can run now?

300 watts won't run most cooling systems.  :'( Guess I'll buy another fan.

Or a new psu?  They're really not all that expensive.

Got a new 1000w power supply. Fans try to turn, but stop. Any reason why? The logo is lit up, so it's recieving power.

Make sure it's getting the right power leads. I.e., there's nothing else on the lead that's running to it. Also make sure the fans themselves don't require a separate power lead. (Again, I know nothing about cooler systems.) Kind of like video cards, maybe they need a secondary power line. I assume you've also thoroughly read any documentation that comes with it (since you've had it so long.)

I have to ask....what do you need a cooling system for when, originally, you were running at a 300w PSU?

If you're still having keyboard issues while trying to get into BIOS, it may actually be the keyboard itself. I've had a handful of keyboards that literally won't activate until the system is up and running, which means I had to swap out a different one every time I wanted to get into BIOS.
