Just finished 1st adventure - some questions
« on: December 17, 2011, 04:50:33 am »

Hello,

I just played my first hero in adventure mode, and I have to admit it has the same addictive quality that comes with fortress mode, but it seemed there wasn't all that much to do.

Some questions:

Do mountain halls, elven retreats, and goblin towers actually exist in the game? I saw them all on the main world map and on the fast travel map but couldn't actually find any of them by walking around.

Do the strength of enemies level with you (like if you have 10 companions the enemy groups are larger) or is it a function of distance from civilization. All I know is I got bored of quests and took off for parts unknown and the enemy groups got much larger and more frequent.

How is it that an iron helm and breastplate on a goblin pretty much prevents me from being able to hit them with my iron long sword? Every single hit was deflected. I took to shield bashing because my sword was ineffective. Stabbing with it would hit but wouldn't do more than bruising.

What is the most versatile weapon for adventure mode? I chose sword and that was great for the most part until I came upon aforementioned armored enemies, then it was pretty much tedium.

Why are there so many civs? I spent most of the time in a relatively small area and yet I became a hero in the eyes of what seemed like over 100 civs.

I pretty much just sold everything but iron armor. Is there a benefit to keeping on the socks, mittens, clothing type items under the armor?

Is every single quest to kill something? The only change being how far they ask you to go to do the deed?

How do you butcher an animal? The wiki is very vague on this. I'm told it can be done, but not what key does it. Do you need to pick up the animal corpse/carcass first?

If my hero was a human, is there a chance that if I start a dwarf fort in the same general region of his exploits that their crafts/murals may commemorate him? My current fort in another world has tons of things about an elf chick who tamed a unicorn.

Considering this is only the rough skeleton of a game, it is amazingly fun and addictive!

I think in the current version only human towns exist, this will change back to all the other ones being there at some point.

I do not believe enemy encounters are effected by anything like skills or companions what so ever, though i could be wrong.

Metals have trouble piercing the same metal type (or inferior) but if you had a steel sword you probably could have killed him with it.  In general blunt weapons made of heavy material work best against armor (as they can break bones through it) like a silver warhammer.

Cloths can offer some extremely basic protection, probably not going to help against much of anything though.

I'm pretty sure all the current adventure quests are go and kill something, though if you do enough of them more important people will give you harder kill quests.

Afraid i don't know about the other questions.

Goblin towers, forest retreats and Dwarven halls do not exist yet. They are planned to be added in, most likely after the human towns in the upcoming version.

Enemy encounters seem to get larger if you have a large party, but their skills are just the same as you would find them alone or with a party of three. In short, they do not gain skill bonuses.

As Irenices already stated, metals have trouble piercing through the same type of metal, and inferior metals have even greater trouble piercing through superior metals. This technically applies to a material's stats, and as such, if you were to mod skin to be as tough as steel, copper would have trouble scratching you.

Personally, I find the Short Sword to be the most versatile weapon in terms of cutting strength. The human sword seems duller when it comes to beheading ogres and the like.

Killing a megabeast (or a titan) typically elevates you to legendary hero status, where every single civ, minus the ones you've made enemies with, suddenly knows of your deed and becomes slightly friendly with you. By default, if you're a legendary hero, goblins will still ambush you, but you can go talk to them and even recruit them. As for the tons of civ thing, it's a worldgen thing. You can set the amounts of civs in a world using custom worldgen, or you can use the worldgen creation parameters outside custom worldgen to get a fewer number of civs (but using that isn't as specific as custom worldgen.).

By default (without modding), clothes provide little, if not nothing at all, defense against enemies. It will, however, provide defense against contact syndromes should you happen to step into a puddle of it.

Currently, yes. Every single quest is to kill something, but Toady plans to add more variety to that.

In order to butcher, you must be standing over the corpse, and wielding a sharp weapon. Press 'x' to open the crafting menu, and there, you'll find the butcher command.

Races don't matter in memorials, so there's a chance that your guy is going to be carved into dwarven history. My mind is fuzzy on this matter, however, and I might be wrong with this.

Pardon my bad english.

There is a way to make Dwarf fortresses, Elf retreats and Goblin towers appear in the game though a little modding. The only problem is they appear like human towns do now.
Code: [Select]
[DEFAULT_SITE_TYPE:CITY]
[LIKES_SITE:CITY]
If you replace the [CAVE_DETAILED], [DARK_FORTRESS], or [TREE_CITY] with this it makes the other races' settlements appear on the map and allows you to walk around their settlements too.

I personally prefer axes since they have a good chance of lobbing off bodyparts and don't stick as often. Or maces (for a similar reason).

Of course, nothing beats gluing every type of weapon on one hand and using the other to choke people. Works every time, especially with high wrestling skill.

The further away from civilization, the fewer members are killed. Sometimes. I've see epic camps near towns.

Go for arms, throats, and legs. Stab repeatedly and you can break bones.

Sword 'n' board + feet.

Long history, high starting civs, etc. Check your worldgen parameters.

It's a bit of padding and helps to prevent syndromes from spreading, basically. I've also noticed fewer injuries with socks and high boots than just high boots.

Yes, but you can make your own.

X.

Wanderer's Friend and Blacksmith's Friend will let you craft more stuff, by the way. Check 'em out.

I think so.

Kind of a thread necro, but I didn't say thank you to everyone who contributed and that's rude so thank you!

Also, sword and board? What's a board? I'm assuming it's a code word and you don't mean an actual board. Also again, in what situations is a kick preferable to a weapon strike or shield bash?

Not to bump this, but I just wanted to say that your English was better then most people I see, so your final comment kind of caught me off guard.

sword and board is code for sword and shield.
shield help with blocking attacks.
short swords are the best as kobold bandits can have steel ones.

Blizzlock your English is better mine.

A weapon strike/shield bash (especially those made out of dense metals like copper/silver) is always better than a kick.

Only on unarmored enemies do kicks shine, it can cave in skulls but against armored enemies (usually just part armored) kicks do well when aimed at unprotected areas.

Against larger enemies (like humans>dwarves/elves in the Vanilla DF or standard DF), kicks will have lesser impact and force.

Go with weapons/shield bashing. Sorry if it did not help or my grammar is skewed in some parts.
