Miner Dig Prefrence
« on: December 28, 2011, 05:39:56 pm »

Right now, the main preference for dwarven miners to dig, is the top left hand corner of the map, down to the bottom right, so jobs further towards the upper left get done first, and those bottom right done last.

I simply propose that toady implament a "miners station point" that allows the player to set this preference to that spot, thus letting the player, who has x y and z planned out, get y done faster than x without having to move their dig designations around all the time. Cutting down on micromanagement. You could even just have the normal preference to the top left, then have a workshop that you could build that set the preference to that. You could even do the same for the woodcutters.

Why would this be usefull?
Moving civilians around without the need of burrows, avoiding dangers like cavern beasts, or making all your men move inside when a seige comes.

All with the simple switch of an "on/off" option.

Useful in itself, I suppose.  But the "moving dig designations around all the time" has not been an issue for me since the Burrows option came about.

Burrows (which also allows you to tell one miner he's the one digging the ditches you've laid out, another the farming area you want dug and yet another the well-shaft you need, while any other(s) are free to to either be added to any of these jobs or left to the "natural order" of digging, regardless) are fairly easy and quick to micromanage.  Is your system going to have separate preferential points for each miner?  Without, I think the existing Burrow system is still more reliable.

Simply put the system uses the origonal preference point as a baseline, then you build a miners post lets call it, for a lump of stone,
From this post you can switch on preference to this post.

This will have the effect of making any dig designations around this post to be preferd to those further away in the job allocation and thus they will get done first. Say you dig down and build a post, then dig a design out thats symetrical, with this post, all parts would be dug out equaly and at the same rate.

This is ment to be used in conjunction with burrows, not replace them.
Burrows are for when you want a SPECIFIC dwarf to do a job, wereas these posts would affect all behaviour without having to go into the burrows screen every invasion and tell all your miners and wood cutters to do to burrow x ie: safety.

A use of this would be to get the gold furthest away from your cavern tunnel entrance mined first and then the closer seams.
the miner ones would have to be deconstructed when all mining jobs are done, but the wood cutter ones could be very usefull when underground tree farms are implamented.

The inverse of the Absolute Manhattan (or Modified Manhattan) distance, being the 'attraction' level, then?

(And, to be honest, I've never used burrows to keep dwarves safe during invasions, I just use burrows to first of all get anti-invasion defences and tunnels dug first, and then hardly anyone ever has to go beyond the outer 'detection ring', at least at ground level, without me knowing about it so I can send along an escort.)

Can I still suggest that, like each military unit (group) can have a separate go-to (or patrol) point, that a 'mining attraction' point would be most useful if it could be assigned per-miner.  In fact, make it an additional element within the Burrows scheme.  As well as (arbitrary shaped) areas/volumes being defined, set one bias point/strange attractor per burrow.  (Dwarves associated with more than one burrow sum the strange-attractor-modified preference levels from each of the two-or-more burrows with such a point set.)  This would be useful for all job-preferencing burrow uses, from generally getting their snacks and refreshments from a given set of near-prefpoint stockpiles to whenever they can picking up the raw stones of a particular stockpile, but letting them go further afield when their primary sources cannot

I think integrating into the Burrow interface would be easier, and unless you're making whole-map burrows (or, in effect, summing to that size across the multiple burrows that any single dwarf is assigned to) it would take very little extra cycles to calculate just the priority/distance factor across a burrow.  Even if you're making it path-related.

But this is your idea, not mine, I'm just riffing on the theme. :)

Feel free
Such a suggestion ive put forward is basicaly: Pathing
and that, will be a loooong way down the list of prioritys. Im just getting the idea in the open, speculation or improvements are welcome.
