Pimp Bandit
« on: December 30, 2011, 12:01:47 am »

I'm trying to introduce dwarf fortress to a friend via adventure mode. He starts out, starts fast-traveling to the nearest town with shops. Along the way, he gets ambushed by bandits. While watching his screen, I tell him to take them out. He started as demigod, so it should be easy, right?

He promptly gets gutted by the leader, and as he's bleeding out I tell him to look at the leader's clothes:

That's the first and only time I've seen any masterwork items worn by a bandit in adventure mode, let alone a full suit. Is this a factor of success of a bandit? If he raids enough, he'll keep finding more and more pieces of masterwork until he finds a full set?

Semi-related: I once saw a bandit wearing all masterwork clothes with a masterwork pike.

Fully related: I have not seen this otherwise. My best advice is to assume that this is true.

"Ringleaders" (and edit: "commanders" and "bosses" too) with hugeass armies are always decked out in high-quality gear, in my experience. In fact, I fought three in a row last time I played.

Leaders, chiefs, and overlords not so much. I believe the distinction is that ringleaders are the big cheese of all the bandit camps in the region, not just a single camp. But I could be mistaken, I'm just guessing. It may also have to do with relative success, or, more likely, the size of the band they hit ya with (and by extension, your group of followers).

Edit: Yeah, it's definately the success that determines their bling (and personal army). I was wondering why I never see pimped out humans; most likely because they're not immortal like goblins and elves are. Longer worldgen = stronger bandits.

Ah, yes, I thought something was amiss. Now I see. There's not enough terrible things in the lakes.

I wonder if the bandit told him to beat it before striking him down.

I was getting jobs from a demon with masterwork clothing on. I can't remember what type of civ he led, but I want to say Human.

Also if I remember correctly the clothing was sized differently but I can't remember what the description was. The demon was apparently gigantic, though again I can't remember the exact weight in Urists other than it was extremely large.
