Help with Cyrillisation of English
« on: December 20, 2011, 05:46:29 am »

A friend of mine is into Russian things and I'm buying a gift for him with his surname in Cyrillic on, however I don't know how to properly translate his surname into Cyrillic. His surname is Rusby, I don't know IPA unfortunately but using a standard middle/upper-class English accent, this would be pronounced;
R as in Rabbit or Rodent
U as in Umbrella or Umbilical
S as in Utilise or Standardise
B as in Bus or Blanket
Y as in Upholstery or Gangly

At the moment, these are the variants I think might be accurate:
Рйзбьи
Рюзбьи
Рузбьи

According to Wikipedia, the letter "ь" palatalises the preceding letter and the letter "и" can only be used after a palatalised  letter, which is why I've included it, I don't know if that's right.
If someone who speaks Russian could help me, that would be great. :)

Dunno about Russian, but in Serbian it'd be Разби.

Here is the pronunciation of all of them using a sheet of paper from when I tried to learn Russian.

First: Couldn't find the second symbol
Middle: Ryuzbee
Last: Roozbee

Since the u in Rusby uses the same sound as father you can use the а symbol. So it would be Рaзбьи. That should be the sound equivalent according to the notes I have. I never did finish learning Russian, but that should be it.

Dunno about Russian, but in Serbian it'd be Разби.

It looks like this is indeed the answer.

Definitely Разби.  Бь is a much softer b than you've implied right there.

Й, AKA « И краткое, » can only be used after another vowel, so your first one is orthographically incorrect, and the other ones are as The Fool implied.
