Dwarves won't drink in the winter!
« on: December 19, 2011, 02:42:24 am »

So here's the situation:

I'm on a map where all the surface water sources freeze over in the colder months. At this time, as long as I have enough booze I'm okay. To help with this, I also made a well that taps into an underground water source.

The problem is, many dwarves don't use the underground water source. When I am low or out of booze, I get a lot of "failed to get water: no source" messages as roughly half of my dwarves drink from the well, and the other half just stand around dying of thirst.

what's up with this? I don't have any injured dwarves, but as it currently is, I expect they would die rather quickly if they get injured in the winter.

Only one dwarf can drink from a particular beverage source (barrel or well) at one time, so what's happening is your well is busy and somebody else gets thirsty. You could solve this by building more wells, but you should solve this by brewing more booze; dwarves never need water unless they're too injured to liquor themselves, and a single still and brewer provides enough booze for 70+ dwarves if they're working full-time if the still isn't cluttered, so you really have no excuse for running dry.

with a super busy fort with 100+ dwarfs i just keep a supply of 800 or 1000 units so i dont constantly have to check. Sometimes it goes as low as 250 before i remember to make more, but thats nearly a year in-game, possibly more.

So just keep a sufficiently large stock. Your dwarfs need more booze than food, so that is your main concern for your farmers
