Fatal Error
« on: September 06, 2006, 12:37:00 am »

Just got the zip - do I have to do anything besides extract and run the dwarfort.exe? I'm getting an error - "Main Index File Missing/Corrupted." This occurs immediately after the fullscreen/windowed dialogue, regardless of which option I choose. I have done literally nothing but extract and run - no files have been deleted or altered, and this occurs with both the most recent build (0.21.104.19d) and the previous one (0.21.104.19c).

I'll be happy to post detailed information about my hardware and software if it'll help. My immediate guess is that I'm running at a somewhat uncommon resolution (1440x900, 16:10 aspect ratio widescreen monitor) and that the main index file doesn't have code for how to handle the res. But that's pulled more or less completely out of my ass, so.

Did you keep the file structure intact when you unzipped?  The index file should be in the data folder.

Dwarf Fortress\Data\index is there, approx. 3kB.

OS?  Anybody else getting this?  All it's trying to do is check if that file is there basically.

XP Pro SP2. I can look up the exact build number if it'll help.

I'm really not sure what's going on, since I'm sure a bunch of people run on roughly that OS.  If you download 19b, does it suddenly work?  19d broken if you download again?  I don't know what this would have to do with anything beside the files being corrupt or in the wrong place, and nobody else seems to be having the issue.

edit: also, if you use the default parameters, does it work?

Version b works.

I dunno. I'll dick around with the c and d versions when it's not 1:30AM. Worth noting that I used exactly the same extraction methods for B that I did for C and D.

Interestingly, all builds seem to work when I naviagte directly to the dwarfort.exe file, but get index corruption messages when I run it through Desktop hotbar\My Computer\C:\[dwarf fortress path.] That's quite strange.

Screenshot Edit:

Working:

That's strange.  I don't have the hot bar type thing, so I can't try it out.

Looks like a working-directory issue, but don't know who'd be considered at fault. Toad uses relative paths from the exe, if the current working directory is something else (say... C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Dwarfort or similar) none of the resources would be found. I can't see any circumstance under which an windows *should* have a different working directory (though many programs have registry keys and poo for install paths).

Have you tried just making a shortcut to the exe and copying it into a start menu folder?
