Game release
« on: December 24, 2011, 11:58:34 pm »

I know this question has been asked many times and I promise I am not being ungrateful to the Toady or anyone else, but I just wanted to know if anyone had a actual idea on how long the game will actually take to be released. Every topic I have read with this question varied from roughly 5-30 years plus. So does anyone have any idea on how long it ill take? Again I know Toady has been working very hard on this and I greatly appreciate such a awesome and free game, I just want to know if I will be alive before this game is complete! haha

The next release is due for mid-January according to Toady, although he warns it may get delayed depending on how the bug fixing goes. But it sounds like you mean.. the hypothetical final release? I don't think Dwarf Fortress works like that. In short:

"Art is never finished, only abandoned."

This is the man's life's work, it'll never be complete, there'll always be something more to add. Granted he may tire of it someday and abandon it in favor of another project (could happen, but I'd be surprised), either way it'll never be 'finished'. It may hit version 1.0 at some arbitrary point in the future, but that probably won't be the end of Dwarf Fortress' development, and I'm not even sure it'll be anything special compared to all the major releases sure to occur before and after 1.0.

Why does it matter?

No creative endeavor is ever completed, its just released.

Look at Nethack, probably one of the longest games in constant production. Sure, at any time, the community developing for it, could just close source the bitch up, and say, done. But they never actually have to.
